Fairtrade: is it as Fair as it Sounds?

The aim of fair trade is clear - to get better deals for Third World farmers. But is Fairtrade really as fair as it sounds?

The term "Fairtrade" has been gaining steady acknowledgment since the 1940s - and justifiably so. After all, when consumers pay just a little more for products like organic coffee, bananas, chocolate and even clothes, farmers are guaranteed a fair price for their goods and labour. So, the fact that over 2,500 product lines in the UK now carry the Fairtrade mark - not to mention that Britain spent over £290 million on fair trade coffee, food, furniture and clothing last year (an increase of 46% on the previous year) - should seem like a good thing, right?

Not quite, as many people are now questioning the effectiveness of the fair-trade practice - or more specifically, whether the support of Fairtrade purchase can actually damage the progress of developing world farmers. Many are claiming that a focus on fair prices for poor farmers doesn't necessarily address issues of mechanisation and industrialisation - radical changes that might enable farmers in developing countries to break out of the poverty cycle. In other words, they believe Fairtrade just encourages Third World farmers to accept and settle for just a bit more than they were originally getting - which still leaves farmers at a level of dependence.

Steve Daley of the Worldwrite charity told the BBC: "How can a few extra pennies a day from Fairtrade be celebrated as an outstanding achievement?"

Daley cites a report from the Financial Times last September, which revealed that a group of fair trade coffee farmers in Peru were getting 10 soles (about US$3) for working a ten-and-a-half hour day, in comparison to the 8 soles (about US$2.40) they were getting prior to the Fairtrade agreement. While there is a difference, it's not significant, and Daley is thus concerned that the fair trade movement is being reshaped to increase farmers' wages by small amounts, rather than to transform poor communities through development.

Madsen Pirie from the Adam Smith Institute - another sceptic of the Fairtrade practice - shares Daley's concern, commenting to the BBC:

"[Fairtrade farmers] become dependent on us continuing to pay 'premium' prices for their goods, [making them] prisoners to our market."

This perspective therefore claims that while small-scale fair trade deals are beneficial to some degree, they aren't enough for Third World farmers to lift themselves out of poverty; they need bigger market developments to achieve that.

Others, however, argue otherwise. , howevEileen Maybin, a spokeswoman for the Fairtrade Foundation, said:

"Fairtrade focuses on ensuring that farmers in developing countries receive an agreed and stable price for the crops they grow, as well as an additional Fairtrade premium to invest in social projects or business development programmes. Typically, farmers' groups decide to use the premium on education, healthcare and clean water supplies, or the repair of roads and bridges, and to strengthen their businesses, improve the quality of their crop or convert to organic production."

She added that farmers and workers involved in Fairtrade always talk about how much they, their families and their communities benefit.

Justin Purser, the commodities manager for Trade Aid Importers in New Zealand, has also witnessed some of the big changes fair trade can make:

"It is very common for fair trade coffee co-operatives to seek to build infrastructure which will cut down on the amount of labour required to process their coffee, and will also enable them to improve their coffee quality and, thereby, the higher prices they can command in the market."

So, the debate of whether fair trade promotes dependency or self-sufficiency continues. However, one thing is certain: fair trade conditions are far more beneficial to Third World farmers than non-fair trade conditions. So, while bigger issues may still be at hand, Fairtrade is certainly a starting point to put an end to cheap production through exploitation. Moreover, buying Fairtrade is something everyone can personally do on a daily basis to help.

There are various ways to support the fair trade practice: you could always pick fair trade products when faced with a choice of fairtrade or non-fairtrade. Many stores, markets and coffee shops do, after all, stock products from both categories. However, why not shop specifically for fair trade products? Or better yet, if the store you normally shop at doesn't stock fair trade products, ask them if they plan to. If companies see enough consumer interest in the fair-trade practice, they may very well decide to switch over - and every little bit counts.

Well I’m not going to lie to you yes it is. But there are certain things that the stock market gurus don’t want you to know. We can actually take a lot of that risk away and provide ourselves with the perfect home business. The thing is it is not that difficult to make money-trading options we just need to acquire the knowledge and the skills that the so-called gurus know!

So I hear you say what is it they know that the average person doesn’t? Well let’s start of with why the stock market guru’s have turn to trading options. Buying stocks and investing large amounts of money can actually be more of a gamble then trading options. Investing in stocks is more of a long-term investment. Large companies can go bust over night or even the price of there stock plummets so low that they are worth peanuts. Sure the price is sure to rise again but it could take a further year or two to receive the money you out laid in the first place. I say why bother!

This is where trading options comes into play. Options are a contract consisting of a thousand shares on a particular stock. We can rent these shares at a fraction of the actual share price. We now have the ability to make money on the stock market when the market is rising falling or going side ways! I can hear you say how? Well there are two types of contracts. The first is a Call Option the other is called a Put Option. Now I’m not going to get technical with you with all the stock market jargon and get you confused I’ll give to you in English.Basicly all we are doing is insuring our rented shares. It’s as simple as that!! So if the market is going to drop we will purchase a Put Option if it was to rise we would then buy a Call Option. The next part of trading options is we need to be able to predict which way the market will go in order to determine which contract to purchase. This is where we have to look at stock market charts. You will need to purchase software and subscribe. The software I use is called The Bourse.

In this software we will be given tools that we can use that will take all the guesswork and the risk out of everything. I’m not going to get into this to much in this article as I do not wish to make this article to long. But what I will tell you there is one tool I use that has never let me down once. I can tell what the market will do three days before it happens. I just wait get into that trade and get out! You see really the key is just knowing where to put you’re money at the right time. That’s all the stock market gurus are doing. I can hear you ask how much money can be made well you will have to have some money to invest but consider this for every dollar the stock goes up or down it is very close to 100% return on your money. But please you will have to acquire the skills and knowledge to trade options. The truth is once you gain the knowledge it is not that difficult I know of fourteen year olds doing this stuff and it only takes half an hour a day to analyse you’re stocks make your phone call and your done.

There is one more thing I would like to mention once you start learning about options you will find out about other things along the way like taking over own superannuation [You cant trade options with your supper] But if we know what the market will do three days before it happens is this not powerful knowledge obviously we would not buy stocks that are going to fall but lets say you knew that the price of a stock was going to rise would you put your money there. Of course you would and when those stocks run out of steam we just sell them and look for another opportunity! Superannuation companies just give you peanuts for your money. You could be paying your self for looking after your own money. Consider this if you had $50,000 you could pay your self $500.00 per week if $100,000 then $1000.00 and so on. The big picture is knowing where to put your money at the right time. Really it is not that hard once you know how!

Individuals considering nursing should carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in a BSN program, because, if they do, their advancement opportunities usually are broader. This can decrease the amount of mandatory overtime that nurses are required to work. In addition, the number of older people, who are much more likely than younger people to need nursing care, is projected to grow rapidly. For example, employment is expected to grow more slowly in hospitals which comprise health cares largest industry than in most other health care industries. In addition, the financial pressure on hospitals to discharge patients as soon as possible should produce more admissions to nursing care facilities.

In this continually changing environment, it is important to study the trends in nursing jobs in order to determine a successful career path. Emergency, or trauma, nurses work in hospital emergency departments and treat patients with life-threatening conditions caused by accidents, heart attacks, and strokes.

With the help and support of more experienced nurses, nurses participate in the nursing process from the beginning. Their nursing expertise and experience on a health care team equip them to manage ambulatory, acute, home-based, and chronic care.

For one to become a nurse education and a nursing license are deemed as necessary to be able to care for others without hazarding their health. But, according to data, the health care has received a major setback due to the diminishing number of registered nurses these days. The dip in nursing career has given birth to temporary and contract nursing. Each and every nursing school actually offers the needed clinical training which is needed so that local communities will be ensured that whatever nursing education and training one gets from these nursing schools they will be trained equally on all the basic levels. Once the Nursing degree is completed, supervised clinical experience is provided in hospital departments such as pediatrics, psychiatry, maternity, and surgery, helping nurses become better care agents.

There really are a lot of career opportunities that are just waiting to be tapped by simply attending a reputable nursing school. The most common specialties can be divided into roughly four categories by work setting or type of treatment; disease, ailment, or condition; organ or body system type; or population. But the most important ingredient in creating a nursing experience that will assist the public apart from the individual is to obtain that quality of being determined to serve others and help them attain their medical goals. This is not something one can be taught in any type of environment; either you got it, or you do not. It is that simple.

There is little doubt that menopause is a momentous and life-changing episode in a woman's life. After all, menopause marks the end of menstruation, and in turn, the conclusion of our child-bearing years. In fact the word ‘menopause' says it all, breaking up into two Greek terms, namely ‘mens' (meaning monthly) and ‘pausis' (meaning cessation). Although menopause has been demonized over the years, in fact it is really just another natural stage in a woman's life cycle. And although it can present challenges such as new and sometimes unpleasant physical symptoms, as well as emotional upheavals, it is something that should be embraced with positivity, understanding and humor.

There is some confusion though between what constitutes menopause proper and what is ‘peri-menopause'. Menopause is the single day when a pre-menopausal woman has failed to have a period for more than twelve months. Confused? Don't be! It's actually really simple. You see, leading up to menopause a woman's ovaries stop producing the regular amounts of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. When levels of both these hormones drop, menstruation ceases and hence a woman's fertility ends. Officially a woman is said to have gone through menopause if she has failed to menstruate for an entire year. So from a medical point of view menopause takes place on the day when a pre-menopausal woman has missed 12 periods running..

What many women do not realize is that there is a stage leading up to those twelve months in which her period becomes absent. This phase is known as "peri-menopause" (also known as "pre-menopause") and it can begin many years before menopause take s place. It is the period in which women undergo most of the symptoms of menopause. So in fact, when a woman says ‘I am going through menopause", generally what she really means is that she is going through peri-menopause.

Technically speaking, peri-menopause starts when a woman's body begins to produce less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Once this process starts, a woman's general fertility begins to diminish, and her ability to fall pregnant is affected. Ultimately this culminates in her final period, which is the complete end of her reproductive years. Peri-menopause can start as early as age 35 sometimes even younger, but typically it begins several years or some months before menopause. Given that most women go through menopause between the ages of 50 and 52, typically peri-menopause will start during a woman's 40's.

During peri-menopause, the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone will become inconsistent and gradually diminish, causing disruption to the usual menstrual cycle. Many women report having irregular periods during peri-menopause, something that is a direct reflection of their changing hormone levels. In addition, some women find their periods will be shorter or longer, and that bleeding may be either heavier or lighter. Likewise it is during the peri-menopausal stage that women will tend to experience the other symptoms which include amongst other things, hot flushes, mood swings, weight gain, depression, migraines, unclear thinking patterns, lethargy and decreased libido.

Like the symptoms of menopause, women have very different and individualized experiences of peri-menopause. What is crucial to remember is that irrespective of the symptom, peri-menopause is a perfectly normal process that simply reflects our natural aging as women.

When my very upset friend finally arrives in the office, he finds - horror of horrors - the errant driver is the new employee the company had hired. Needless to say, my friend has not spoken a word to him since.

Interview Etiquette: An Overview

If etiquette can be described as rules governing socially acceptable behavior, they apply to a job interview, too, in the same fashion. Good etiquette shows from the moment you enter the company, and how you conduct yourself until you are called.

1. Unless someone shows you in, knock at the door before you enter.

2. Being lenient with dressing, un-pressed clothing or wearing casual clothing for interviews is simply not good etiquette. An office environment and especially interviews call for formal dress.

3. Greeting the interviewer is another aspect of etiquette. Greet him before he greets you, and with a firm handshake. Be assertive in shaking hands, as this is where you can start building a good impression. Remember, being assertive does not mean you are aggressive. Some people slightly take back their opposite shoulder and bend forward simultaneously while shaking hands as a show of respect. But don't indulge in over doing it or shaking hands for endless seconds.

4. Wait until they offer a seat to you or you can ask them if you can have a seat. Choose a seat opposite the interviewer so you can keep direct eye contact. You can sit in a semi-casual position. Crossing the legs at knees may be alright but you should never put a foot over your opposite knee. Shaking your legs during the interview or scratching your head are things to avoid.

5. If you are offered business card, don't just stuff it into your pocket; instead, study the card for a while. You should ask a pertinent question, too. Never write anything on the card; it is not your notepad.

6. Trying to monopolize the conversation will often annoy the interviewer. Making rude remarks or speaking negatively about your past employers will expose the down side of your character. Sitting there with nothing to say can be seen as a negative. You have to have something to say, even if it is just small talk.

7. When you are asked to talk about yourself, they are not asking about your family or personal history. This is your opportunity to make the most of your time; talk about how you can contribute to the organization and so on.

8. Avoid discussing salary in the beginning unless the interviewer brings it up first.

9. Never forget to thank the interviewer before you leave the room; also don't forget to ask whether they want you to get in touch with them or when they can get back you.

10. On your way out, give a thank you and a smile to the receptionist or secretary. These are the people that will often give feedback to the interviewer.

While this isn't a profound strategy I admit, it is amazing to me how often I see that it is overlooked. Plenty of businesses and business people need to be reminded.

I don't mean putting together some wishy-washy, lukewarm appreciations or referral ideas that most businesses have, such as calendars, birthday cards or fruit baskets. I mean grabbing insight into your client that is so intense that it is not new clients, but old that end up adding to your growth.

Taken together, both old and new clients are a powerhouse to more referrals and a stellar referral program. I am not sure who said it first, "Your best prospects are your existing clients." This is, indeed, a very simple yet true statement.

Are you putting your referral efforts into your existing clients? Are you positioning yourself for reselling? Upselling? Cross-selling? Are you staying in touch everyway possible? Try it.

Some ideas I can think of to subtly remind your clients you want referrals include using package inserts, regular mailings, special offers, coupons, referral letters, short notes, article clippings, and yes, even e-mails.

1)Location

Unless you're being relocated by your employer to a fixed location you will quickly discover that it's a big wide world and you therefore have a great deal of choice when considering which country best suits your lifestyle and employment requirements. In an effort to narrow down your search a little consider any country you're interested in in view of the following considerations: -

i)The location's distance from your home country and your family and friends - remember that there will be times you want or need to return home and/or to catch up with old faces. How easy and affordable will it be for you to go ‘back home' should the need arise and how simple will it be for your friends and family to come and visit you?

ii)The weather - some countries are more or less hospitable in weather terms and someone who originally heralds from Tropical North Queensland may find it a struggle to cope with the wet, grey winters in England for instance and someone from Canada may find is a shock coping with the searing summer temperatures in Spain. Thinking about your ideal overseas location from a weather perspective may well cut down your choices!

iii)Your family - particularly if you're expatriating with children you'll need to think carefully about the healthcare and education facilities available overseas and also about getting your essential insurances in place before you go. Some countries are more expensive and restrictive than others...bear this in mind.

iv)Language barriers - if you're considering moving to a country where the mother tongue is other than your own will this restrict your employment prospects? Can you overcome this by learning the language before you go or do you need to reconsider your destination?

2)Employment

Are you a professional in a given industry or do you have a flexible skill set that will allow you to seek work in many different sectors? Do your qualifications translate favourably and transfer directly overseas? What sectors would you like to work in, in which countries can you find work in a profession that suits you?

These are all questions you have to consider carefully. Next, if you're moving overseas permanently you need to be practical and realistic and consider the long term employment prospects for you, your spouse and any other family members accompanying you...if you can find employment today how easy will it be to change employer or advance your career later in life?

You should then examine your desired location carefully and determine whether or not you need work permits, residency visas and permission to work and live abroad, if so you should get the ball rolling and apply as soon as possible in case of any paperwork and administrative delays.

Also consider the taxation and financial aspects of working abroad...remember that if you're moving to a low cost country the economy will likely pay lower wages than you're used to, will these be sufficient to sustain your ideal lifestyle?

3)Accommodation

Last but not least is the thought of finding somewhere to live abroad. By now you'll have a clear favourite in the location stakes but now you need to examine the property market and whether it's easy and affordable to rent accommodation when you first arrive and whether, long term, it's possible for foreign residents to purchase freehold property abroad.

If you're planning on moving abroad permanently you'll also need to think about moving your household belongings and personal effects with you, and what about transporting your pets overseas too?

The first challenge coin rule to be observed is , what is a coin? A coin is a coin. It is not a coin that has been attached to a belt buckle, a keychain, a coffee mug, or a paperweight. These items are not unit coins. They are belt buckles, key chains, coffee mugs and paperweights. Challenge coins are kept on one's person as coins. The only exception to this rule is a coin placed in a holder or clasp and worn around the neck like a necklace. This is considered a valued use of a coin and would still be considered a challenge coin.

The "coin check" consists of a challenge and a response.

The "challenge" maybe either verbal or visual. A verbal coin check is initiated by holding your coin in the air and stating, so that everyone present can hear, that you are initiating a coin check.
A visual coin check is initiated by firmly placing your coin on a flat surface with a force sufficient to let everyone know that they are being challenged.

The correct response to the challenge is to produce your unit coin and show it to the challenger. Please note that only your correct unit coin is an acceptable response to a challenge. Unit coins from other units are not acceptable.

If you are challenged and cannot respond to the challenge in the accepted manor you must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and all members of the group being challenged. If everyone being challenged responds in the correct manor then the challenger must buy a round of drinks for all those he challenged. Failure to buy a round is considered a despicable crime and may require that you turn in your coin to the issuing agency.

Coin checks are permitted at any time and at any place. You are advised to keep your unit coin within arms length at all times.

The Journey is the Point

Towering at 6288 ft., Mt. Washington is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Each year, thousands of people get to the top by a variety of means, including hiking and driving. Enjoying the spectacular view without spending hours hiking up may seem like a time saver to some, but me? You couldn't pay me enough to skip the hike, because I believe the journey, not the destination, is the point.

A recent coaching session with a client brought that story to mind when she expressed frustration after observing that one of her competitors' business was well established after only a few months. As small- business entrepreneurs, some of us may look enviously at those who seem to go up the ladder of success with greater speed and wonder why we can't do the same.

In my client's case, it became clear after a little prodding that her competitor benefited from a 'sugar daddy', providing her with all the cash flow needed for her new business: She had taken the car ride up the mountain, while my client was still climbing up, frustrated and feeling defeated.

There's something to be said about getting your hands dirty and doing the grunt work yourself. I know my business inside and out - my clients, my market, my product, my competition, my suppliers, my industry - all of which comes only by actually doing it the long way.

Credibility in business comes partly from experience in successfully overcoming obstacles. Nobody wants to do business with someone who has always had it easy and never encountered a problem; such a person likely never would have had an occasion to use creativity in problem-solving or to develop strong customer service skills. Either way, this is not someone customers want to do business with in the long run.

Looking at the mountain ahead, the insecure part of us may whisper: "Can I really do this? Will my own legs really get me all the way up there?" The answer is yes, if you have the passion to take the necessary steps along the way, even if at times your back is killing you and you may not see the trail clearly.

Any hiker will attest to the importance of regular stops for rest and reorientation. So take a break, look back at how far you've come and take pride in the work you've done to get there.

There are lots of books that teach you the basics of specialty baking. The best way to learn though, is by practice. For a start, you could always take on simple jobs from friends and family and once you feel confident, you could market your skills on a wider scale. Not everyone can be a specialty baker. There's a fair amount of artistic ability involved but if you've got the flair and skills, there's a money making niche waiting for you.

Home-made Food

Everything that you can make at home, can be made to sell - jams, preserves, cookies, sauces, pasta, candy - the list goes on and on. What you want to do is find THE one recipe that you can cook really well and concentrate on it. Give free samples to your friends and family and let them know that you're taking orders if they'd like to buy some. If you're ready move on to a bigger scale, then you might want to consider supplying your home-made food to your local grocery stores or even setting up a stall at your local market place.

Are These Really Low Cost Ideas?

When we first started our home catering business we just used whatever we had in our kitchen with a healthy dose of ingenuity! We DID spend about fifty dollars on flyers but that was it. However, when your business starts to grow and your profits start to roll in, you WILL need to invest in equipment to increase efficiency and productivity. Before our home based catering business, we were a one-refrigerator family. Six months down the road, we were a 2 refrigerator, 3-freezer family - and we haven't even begun to include fryers, ovens and stoves. And yes... we now buy stuff like sauces, eggs and flour by the crates!

The secret to making money with these ideas

The secret to finding success with these ideas is simple - persistence and quality. You need to keep working at it. Just as there are all sorts of people on this planet, there will always be different taste preferences. There will ALWAYS be people who like your cooking some who don't. Be encouraged by the compliments, but don't let the criticisms get to you. Keep at it long enough and your customer base WILL grow. Of course, being persistent means nothing if you don't maintain a high standard of quality. Nothing will kill your reputation faster than inferior quality or dirty food. Everybody needs to eat and a home based food business will always make you a nice sum of money!

Allah is pronounced as Allahu when comes at the beginning of a sentence.
The name Allah is the Great name of the Lord, the Almighty Creator of this cosmos.
The name Allah is mentioned in Quran 1567 times
God is mentioned in the Bible 3877 times.

The unique linguistic phenomenon of the name Allah:

The name Allah is a unique name which is quite different from the name God.
From the linguistic point of view, the name Allah can give the same meaning if we use:
• All of its four characters
• Three characters
• Two Characters
• Or the last character

To illustrate this unique phenomenon:
If we say Allah; it means the Great name of the Lord, the Creator.
If we deduct, subtract or take away the first letter Aleph, then we get three Characters (Lam, Lam and Haa) which is pronounced as: Lillah and means: To Allah.

When you are working from home, there is always going to be something inside of you that says that no matter how much work you do, you can always do more. There are several ways to avoid this but first you must understand that it is vital that you take steps to avoid working all day and night. You mgith think you are being very productive but you need to know that working too many hours will make you burn out on what you are doing and might cause you to cut corners because you simply do not care any more. You might find that you have to go back to your old job because you simply can not stand your home business any longer. It is very important that you do not work long hours.

There are ways to make sure this happens. First of all, from the beginning, set hours for yourself. Tell yourself that you will only work certain hours and then stick to it. Depending on what you are doing in your home business there are ways to do this. If you are a project based home business, take only as many projects as you can complete in regular hours. If you are a home business that relies on being available, be sure that you have clear cut hours to work.

These can be any that you wish. If you want to work all day and night, that is fine but then be sure you are taking many days off a week. If you want to work for 3 days straight, and then have 4 day long weekends, this might be a great way to spend time with your family. If you want to work each day, then make your days shorter.

Gee, that worked so well, why don't I cut back on the product quality, save a few bucks there and see if I can get my investment partner off my back.

Every small business owner has been at this fork in the road. Each one must make his own decision as to which road to take. Looking the other way is the easy route at first but it is costly in the long run. A small business should be built on partnerships of trust with customers, vendors and financial partners. Honesty and integrity in the marketplace are wonderful pillow partners. The kind of partners that will let you go to sleep at night with the satisfaction of knowing you were truthful and honest at any cost. There are no skeletons hidden in your closet which can rear their ugly heads. You don't have to be looking over your shoulder while your trying to move your business forward. At the end of the day you can say "It's been a good day!"

Face-to-face Vs. Phone Sales: a Case Study

I recently was halfway around the world, meeting a new business partner, and found myself in the midst of a seller’s nightmare: I had to do an in-person prospecting call on one of the world’s largest banks, with an unfamiliar business partner, with no idea of the reason behind the cold call, or the people who would be there.

When I was picked up from the airport I was told of this meeting, and there was no one available to discuss anything with me until we were at the client site. Nightmare.

As we entered the building, I quickly asked the history of the prospect relationship, the expected outcome, and the level of the folks we were meeting with. The news wasn’t good: this was the first prospecting call and they weren’t sure who would be attending, but they hoped I could help them open the account by using my Buying Facilitation model to encourage a working relationship.

Great. Just great. Unprepared. No data. No strategic planning. The prospect would see an unknown vendor, coming for an unknown reason, dragging along a very tired – and unknown – foreigner. They’d most likely know nothing about my work, models, or books. They wouldn’t know how to differentiate me from the competition, or how to choose me.

What would success even look like? And other than what I’d read and heard about this Middle Eastern country I didn’t even understand the cultural norms of vendor/client communication, not to mention if my being a woman would be a negative.

THE NEED FOR FACE MEETINGS

When Dale Carnegie introduced the need for face meetings, face time was vital due to the difficulty in getting broad exposure for products. Now, we can take it for granted that the next seller who stands in front of our prospect – if we can even get an appointment! - will be just as charming, caring, well-dressed, smart, and professional. And if a personal relationship is the only criteria for a prospect choosing a vendor, then the seller has a truly long slog here, to find only those buyers with buying patterns and personalities that match the seller’s selling patterns and personality.

I don’t believe in using my body as a prospecting tool. I believe that if it’s important to a seller to have a face meeting, they should first become part of the prospect’s decision team and have already decided collaboratively, with the prospect, how they plan on working together and how best to use a face meeting. Then, a face meeting cements the relationship and brings together the rest of the decision team, even on the first meeting. Otherwise, the only prospects who will agree to a face meeting are those already in the market, and interviewing untold others. Not to mention that when several things seem the same, the only differentiator is price.

But I didn't have much choice in this instance, and there was no agreement, action plan, or stated outcome that a prospecting call using Buying Facilitation would have ensured.

I realized that I would be out of control during this call, even if my training would solve their business problem: there was no prior decision on who should attend the meeting and an untold number of people from the decision team wouldn't be present (and would need to be managed afterwards somehow); and if they were willing to see us on a cold call, they were certainly seeing others.

CASE STUDY OF A FACE-TO-FACE PROSPECTING CALL

Given that my choices were limited, our meeting proved interesting. I believe I made a difference in our ultimate outcome, but I’m not sure that a face meeting was any more successful than if I had used Facilitative Questions on the phone.

I’ll describe the face visit conversation, and then offer a mock Buying Facilitation conversation as to a phone call I might have had prior to the meeting.

Meeting

At the prospect's site, a large man with a gentle persona, followed by a smaller, local, man, came out to bring us to a small office in which sat a very professionally attired woman. The large man sat down in a tiny chair, and the smaller man went behind a very large desk. As they introduced themselves, I barely had time to peruse the 2 business cards handed to me – the men gave me cards, but not the woman.

I addressed my first Facilitative Question to the man behind the desk: “How are you currently adding new sales skills to the ones you’re already offering your

staff?” I realized that I had addressed the question to the wrong man, as I noticed everyone looked to the large man in the small chair for an answer. I quickly glanced down at the business cards and noticed this man was the big big boss. He began telling a charming story of how he was just in the country for a few weeks, and newly brought in to head up this division and bring in new thinking. He said he was delighted that I asked that question.

OK. I was on the right track but there was a major problem: the local man at the big desk had been at the bank for a long time, and was the sales manager for 5 years. If he had been doing a good job, the new man wouldn’t have been brought in! Not to mention that the smaller man most likely had a team of loyal followers (in countries outside the US, folks stay at their jobs for decades) who would have some strong feelings about a new man, from another country, coming in with big ideas that would certainly change their status quo.

The problem was much, much bigger than needing new sales skills. All of the brilliance I offered would be moot if they couldn’t manage the internal politics that this problem created. And, obviously, I couldn’t manage the internal politics for them: while their Identified Problem was something I could solve with my product, until they could manage their internal politics, they weren’t going to take any action.

The internal problem

Once I recognized the elephant in the room, I decided to ask a tactical Facilitative Question to help my prospects begin to make sense of their main issue:

“Since you (the man at the desk) have been around for some time and have a loyal team behind you, how can you bring in new thinking (which he obviously had failed to do) that might represent change, and have the team remain loyal?”

The man behind the desk nodded:

“No problem. No problem. We can handle this. We are very excited to have someone new join us with new ideas. We look forward to change and hearing how you could help us.”

Right.

The boss quietly said:

“That is why I’m here: to bring in new thinking, and manage implementations. I’m sure that we can all get on board here and there shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve done this sort of thing in other banks, and we’ve been successful. I have met the folks here and they are great. It will be fine.”

OK. Now I had a larger problem. They were either really going to be fine, they were doing denial, or just giving me, the outsider, the company view. I had no way of knowing. I turned to the woman (turns out she was the training manager) seated, quietly, next to me and said to her:

“I’m so glad that everyone is getting on so well, and I’m sure that it will work out fine. I’m wondering what you would need from a vendor to ensure an easy implementation?”

She briefly opened her eyes wide, and quickly returned to her very very composed, professional behavior.

“Thanks for bringing that up and caring. I’m sure that there won’t be a problem, like the gentlemen said (smart woman). In case there is, maybe you could explain to us what you have done in the past when bringing in new material? And possibly give us a run-down on what you have that might be interesting to us to help us differentiate ourselves from our competitors, as I saw on your website (Ah. The woman had done her homework.)? If what you have has value for us, maybe you and I could have further conversations about the content. Along the way, if any internal issues come up – which I don’t think there will be – we can discuss them at the time.”

Good. I just got onto the decision team.

“Great. It seems to me there are several issues here. One: how will you all decide on the specific type of new thinking you would be willing to bring in; Two: how you’ll know that one specific set of skills would work better than another since you wouldn’t have a way to understand the outcome before you start; Three: how you could ensure, before you start, that a new skill set would work comfortably with that your folks are already using; Four: how will you know when it’s time to address implementation issues; Five: how would you know we would be the type of partner who could help you manage all of these issues?”

Follow-up action

The boss nodded vigorously and smiled. He asked me to write down the points I’d just made, email them to him, and contact him in two weeks to move the conversation forward. Sounded great – until I called him at the appropriate time, and he told me that he had handed everything over to the training manager. I had to ask permission to speak with her as no one had given me her number. I have left a message for her and have gotten no response yet.

I believe my ‘relationship’ with them all is as good as their memory. Did they like me? Appreciate me and my questions? Yes. Did that move the sale along? Not convinced – they still have too many internal issues to manage. And now I have to find ways to maintain the relationship and conversation, while living half-way around the world.

Because there was so much going on in the room, I'm not convinced they understood the difference between Buying Facilitation and a more conventional selling model. I have started a conversation, and we have developed some rapport. I believe they trust me a bit, and might consider a pilot – but I’m also sure they will pilot other programs as well.

Since I teach that it’s not necessary to make a face-to-face visit until the internal decision team has agreed to change and has a model for the specifics of how to bring in a new idea/product/vendor, I was curious if what happened in this interaction could have been managed better on the phone. I think so.

MOCK CONVERSATION OF TYPICAL BUYING FACILITATION SEQUENCE

I've never had a face meeting prior to signing a contract with a major corporation, and yet on a second or third conference call, I've met with the entire decision team and made collaborative decisions involving a great deal of buy-in and change. I will create a similar conversation here, much like I've done (literally) thousands of times before. Note the difference with the absence of the political issues, and how far I can get using these Facilitative Questions on the phone:

SDM: How are you currently offering new selling skills to your sales people?

Boss: We haven’t been. I’m just here a few weeks, and I was brought in to help us differentiate ourselves from the competition. I’m actually seeking new material to trial now as part of my purview.

SDM: That sounds exciting. What fun! What has stopped your group from achieving this until now?

Boss: The past manager was very good at keeping the status quo and managing the office politics. My job is to find new thinking and bring it in. Do you have something new for us?

SDM: Well, I’ve got a new sales model, but let’s discuss that in a few moments as I think there are other issues we’d need to manage first. I suspect you’ll have to manage some internal, personal issues with the old manager and his team with whatever material you choose. How would you need to work with a new vendor to ensure that you, the decision team, and the vendor, would all work well together while implementing a trial?

Boss: We’d all have to get on board here, make some team agreements, and monitor the implementation from the beginning. I would bring in the training manager to help with this as I believe her to be very committed to success. I’d also have to understand that your material, over the more conventional material, would bring me the new skills that I’m seeking while not creating too much confusion for our sales folks who have been using SPIN for a long time.

SDM: So as we move forward, we’d have to ensure that there is buy in from the decision team, and be aware of any danger signs. We could work that out between us. Before I give you data about my Buying Facilitation Method®, can you tell me what would new skills give you that you don’t have already?

Boss: We’re having great difficulty differentiating ourselves in this market: our products appear similar to our competitors, and clients don’t know how to buy us. We’ve tried educating them, but that doesn’t seem to make much of a difference in our numbers.

SDM: My model, Buying Facilitation, helps buyers know how to choose you over the competition. It’s a collaborative decision making model, rather than a product placement or problem solving model – it gives sellers the tools to teaches buyers how to buy, rather than approaching it through the product sale. How would you know, before we were to do a pilot, that you and the rest of the team would be willing to consider a model this unusual?

Boss: I’d have to understand it better, and the team would have to agree to consider it. How can we get a hold of material that would help us learn more about it?

SDM: In addition to sending you some reading material, I’m actually coming to that part of the world in a few weeks. I would love to stop in and meet with all of you. What would be the best use of our time together once I’m there? And, given all of the political issues you’re facing in your new assignment, who should be at the meeting, what would you need to see from me, and what sort of an outcome would we be seeking? I think it would be best to plan all of this before I get there.

Different outcomes

In my estimation, had I been able to use Facilitative Questions on the phone prior to our face meeting as I did in the mock conversation above, I could have helped the Boss recognize the internal issues (politics, relationship issues, and management issues, etc.) that needed to be managed outside of the purview of the Identified Problem and accelerate his decision cycle accordingly. I would have become his decision partner and eschewed the uncomfortable relationship issues that came up during our meeting. By the time it was relevant to discuss and pitch my product, he and the team would have been in a position to make a purchasing decision - or not, and I would have known that prior to making a face visit. Use face-to-face meetings to cement the decisions the entire decision team needs to make with you; use the phone to help the early decisions get made and the decision teams coalesce and start taking the action they need to take anyway. It’s the internal, unique, and idiosyncratic systems end of the buying decision that’s been hidden from us for so long, but is now able to be managed with the Buying Facilitation Method®.

The time it takes buyers to come up with their own answers is the length of the sales cycle, whether it's a decision to buy an insurance policy or a company-wide implementation. By leading the buyer through the entire range of necessary decisions, you can reduce the length of the sales cycle by 75% and you can do much of this on the phone. By sticking to Dale Carnegie's belief that sales calls need to be face-to-face, you're 1. helping delay the sales cycle, 2. not getting to partner with the decision team in a truly supportive way until farther into the sales cycle than necessary, 3. wasting unnecessary time on prospects who won't buy, 4. keeping yourself solidly in a price, product, and service competition, and 5. waiting in the dark as the decision team figures out the decisions they need to make that you could have sequentially walked them through much more quickly.

How To Become a Fighter Pilot

Becoming a fighter pilot isn't something that happens overnight. It requires lots of time, dedication and perseverance if you want to be successful. A special type of person is required to join such an elite group. Funnily enough, most people think that becoming a fighter pilot is mostly about flying, when in fact that isn't the case. You also need to successfully train as an officer. So you're primarily an officer, even if you continue on to be a fighter pilot. Your primary job is to defend the USA against its enemies, and any career aspirations are secondary to that.

There are three possible ways to train as an officer - service academy, Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). As a high school student, you should apply to a service academy if you want to become an officer. You can choose between the Air Force Academy, Annapolis (Navy & Marines), West Point (Army) or the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. All of them put you through rigorous military training, and you also obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. If you have a strong aptitude to advanced math and science then you'll have a much better chance of succeeding.

If you're planning to enter one of the academies, then be aware that the competition to get in is fierce. You'll need a high school grade point average of 3.8 as a cadet, as well as a SAT score of 1300. This has to include a minimum of 1050 for verbal and math. It's a good idea to have a strong extra-curricular activity record as well, even more so if those activities demonstrate leadership or athletic skills.

So if you want to enter a service academy, earn a commission and receive a college education, the path is simple. It's not easy though - you'll need to perform very well in high school, and not just inside the classroom. It takes a long time to work your way through the application process. You certainly don't just hand over a simple form and expect to be accepted into a service academy. You need three letters of recommendation, extensive paperwork, and even to be nominated by your Congressman. To improve your chances of success, start preparing your application early, and certainly don't start any later than your junior year.

The bad news is that just because you made it into the service academy, pilot training slots are still extremely limited. Being accepted by the academy is a piece of cake by comparison. However pilots are in demand right now, as all the military streams are struggling to retain the pilots they have. So if you're keen to be a fighter pilot, it's a little easier than usual to obtain a slot. How long that lasts, nobody knows.

You might also find that The Reserve Officers Training Corps is the best option for you. With this, you study at a college or university as normal, but add in the officer training requirements. On top of your regular studies you will have to attend military training and courses, spend at least one summer on a training camp and attend weekly meetings. Most of the time you live as a civilian, only donning your military garb when you're actually attending military classes. When your officer training is complete, you can then apply for specific programs such as pilot training. Competition is tough, and you'll need to pass some rigorous academic, medical and testing requirements to be successful.

For those who decide a little later in life to become a fighter pilot, The Officer Candidate School (OCS), sometimes called The Officer Training School (OTS), is the best route. Within 4 months OCS will take a college graduate with no background in the military and turn him into an officer. Again, you have the opportunity to apply for pilot training school when you qualify as an officer, but the competition is just as fierce. It's also necessary for you to begin training as a fighter pilot before you turn 27, so this third option is only available for a limited time.
