Procurement specialists take on the responsibility for everything a business spends, whether it is through the direct management of spending budgets or working with department managers. The basic role of the procurement or purchasing department is to make sure the company gets the best price, quality and service support, so that the company will be able to maintain a supply of all products by managing suppliers. Even without the director, the role of the Procurement professional is not just a financial one, but also one of a technical, creative, operational, and marketing nature. What used to be the role of one or two people in days past is now one of a fully functional department with a wide range of career opportunities available to those with the proper training and knowledge.
With the growth in popularity in Procurement, the need for educational training developed. This created the development of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply as well as degree courses in Purchasing Management. With the many changes that have evolved in this field, the role of the Purchasing Director has become more focused on management and strategy with very little hands on involvement other than with that of top level project management. With a starting salary that averages £60,000, one can expect someone in the capacity of a purchasing executive to shoulder a great deal of responsibility with the territory. Some of the duties this may involve on a daily basis include the following:

Over the long term, this position may also involve the development of product and service strategies, range reviews, meeting targets, and the development and implementation of new strategies and initiatives. It’s the type of position that has seen a great deal of change and will continue to do so as the field of procurement continues to evolve in order to keep up with technical changes throughout all business fields. It’s important that anyone involved in this field is able to accept changes and be willing and able to address any new processes with all staff members on a regular basis.
