Fairtrade: is it as Fair as it Sounds?

The aim of fair trade is clear - to get better deals for Third World farmers. But is Fairtrade really as fair as it sounds?

The term "Fairtrade" has been gaining steady acknowledgment since the 1940s - and justifiably so. After all, when consumers pay just a little more for products like organic coffee, bananas, chocolate and even clothes, farmers are guaranteed a fair price for their goods and labour. So, the fact that over 2,500 product lines in the UK now carry the Fairtrade mark - not to mention that Britain spent over £290 million on fair trade coffee, food, furniture and clothing last year (an increase of 46% on the previous year) - should seem like a good thing, right?

Not quite, as many people are now questioning the effectiveness of the fair-trade practice - or more specifically, whether the support of Fairtrade purchase can actually damage the progress of developing world farmers. Many are claiming that a focus on fair prices for poor farmers doesn't necessarily address issues of mechanisation and industrialisation - radical changes that might enable farmers in developing countries to break out of the poverty cycle. In other words, they believe Fairtrade just encourages Third World farmers to accept and settle for just a bit more than they were originally getting - which still leaves farmers at a level of dependence.

Steve Daley of the Worldwrite charity told the BBC: "How can a few extra pennies a day from Fairtrade be celebrated as an outstanding achievement?"

Daley cites a report from the Financial Times last September, which revealed that a group of fair trade coffee farmers in Peru were getting 10 soles (about US$3) for working a ten-and-a-half hour day, in comparison to the 8 soles (about US$2.40) they were getting prior to the Fairtrade agreement. While there is a difference, it's not significant, and Daley is thus concerned that the fair trade movement is being reshaped to increase farmers' wages by small amounts, rather than to transform poor communities through development.

Madsen Pirie from the Adam Smith Institute - another sceptic of the Fairtrade practice - shares Daley's concern, commenting to the BBC:

"[Fairtrade farmers] become dependent on us continuing to pay 'premium' prices for their goods, [making them] prisoners to our market."

This perspective therefore claims that while small-scale fair trade deals are beneficial to some degree, they aren't enough for Third World farmers to lift themselves out of poverty; they need bigger market developments to achieve that.

Others, however, argue otherwise. , howevEileen Maybin, a spokeswoman for the Fairtrade Foundation, said:

"Fairtrade focuses on ensuring that farmers in developing countries receive an agreed and stable price for the crops they grow, as well as an additional Fairtrade premium to invest in social projects or business development programmes. Typically, farmers' groups decide to use the premium on education, healthcare and clean water supplies, or the repair of roads and bridges, and to strengthen their businesses, improve the quality of their crop or convert to organic production."

She added that farmers and workers involved in Fairtrade always talk about how much they, their families and their communities benefit.

Justin Purser, the commodities manager for Trade Aid Importers in New Zealand, has also witnessed some of the big changes fair trade can make:

"It is very common for fair trade coffee co-operatives to seek to build infrastructure which will cut down on the amount of labour required to process their coffee, and will also enable them to improve their coffee quality and, thereby, the higher prices they can command in the market."

So, the debate of whether fair trade promotes dependency or self-sufficiency continues. However, one thing is certain: fair trade conditions are far more beneficial to Third World farmers than non-fair trade conditions. So, while bigger issues may still be at hand, Fairtrade is certainly a starting point to put an end to cheap production through exploitation. Moreover, buying Fairtrade is something everyone can personally do on a daily basis to help.

There are various ways to support the fair trade practice: you could always pick fair trade products when faced with a choice of fairtrade or non-fairtrade. Many stores, markets and coffee shops do, after all, stock products from both categories. However, why not shop specifically for fair trade products? Or better yet, if the store you normally shop at doesn't stock fair trade products, ask them if they plan to. If companies see enough consumer interest in the fair-trade practice, they may very well decide to switch over - and every little bit counts.

We can actually take a lot of that risk away and provide ourselves with the perfect home business. The thing is it is not that difficult to make money-trading options we just need to acquire the knowledge and the skills that the so-called gurus know!

So I hear you say what is it they know that the average person doesn’t? Well let’s start of with why the stock market guru’s have turn to trading options. Buying stocks and investing large amounts of money can actually be more of a gamble then trading options. Investing in stocks is more of a long-term investment. Large companies can go bust over night or even the price of there stock plummets so low that they are worth peanuts. Sure the price is sure to rise again but it could take a further year or two to receive the money you out laid in the first place. I say why bother!

This is where trading options comes into play. Options are a contract consisting of a thousand shares on a particular stock. We can rent these shares at a fraction of the actual share price. We now have the ability to make money on the stock market when the market is rising falling or going side ways! I can hear you say how? Well there are two types of contracts. The first is a Call Option the other is called a Put Option. Now I’m not going to get technical with you with all the stock market jargon and get you confused I’ll give to you in English.Basicly all we are doing is insuring our rented shares. It’s as simple as that!! So if the market is going to drop we will purchase a Put Option if it was to rise we would then buy a Call Option. The next part of trading options is we need to be able to predict which way the market will go in order to determine which contract to purchase. This is where we have to look at stock market charts. You will need to purchase software and subscribe. The software I use is called The Bourse.

In this software we will be given tools that we can use that will take all the guesswork and the risk out of everything. I’m not going to get into this to much in this article as I do not wish to make this article to long. But what I will tell you there is one tool I use that has never let me down once. I can tell what the market will do three days before it happens. I just wait get into that trade and get out! You see really the key is just knowing where to put you’re money at the right time. That’s all the stock market gurus are doing. I can hear you ask how much money can be made well you will have to have some money to invest but consider this for every dollar the stock goes up or down it is very close to 100% return on your money. But please you will have to acquire the skills and knowledge to trade options. The truth is once you gain the knowledge it is not that difficult I know of fourteen year olds doing this stuff and it only takes half an hour a day to analyse you’re stocks make your phone call and your done.

There is one more thing I would like to mention once you start learning about options you will find out about other things along the way like taking over own superannuation [You cant trade options with your supper] But if we know what the market will do three days before it happens is this not powerful knowledge obviously we would not buy stocks that are going to fall but lets say you knew that the price of a stock was going to rise would you put your money there. Of course you would and when those stocks run out of steam we just sell them and look for another opportunity! Superannuation companies just give you peanuts for your money. You could be paying your self for looking after your own money. Consider this if you had $50,000 you could pay your self $500.00 per week if $100,000 then $1000.00 and so on. The big picture is knowing where to put your money at the right time. Really it is not that hard once you know how!

Defective pipes and rainwater guttering is a source of many damp spots in the building. Therefore, it is necessary to keep it well maintained.

The most appropriate time to carry out repairs is in autumn when rains are over and weather is dry and slightly pleasant.

If water is seen coming over the side of pipe during heavy rain it means that some rubbish is blocking its opening. Scoop the rainwater pipe with a trowel or a cardboard piece which can bend into face of guttering pipe. After removing all the solid rubbish and soft rubbish underneath flush the guttering with water. The best method is using a hosepipe.

Be careful while clearing a downpipe. If you try to push the blockage downward you might block it instead of opening it. Place a bowl at the bottom of the pipe so that the rubbish does not go down the gutter at ground level and block it. Get the rubbish out by using a stiff wire of steal.

Guttering is normally fixed in a way as to give it a little slope. If water is collecting along the run of the guttering then you might need to reposition it or change its slope. If the affected position is plastic guttering it is probably easy to fix it. Inspect cast iron and steel pipes if there is any rust; if you find it then clean it with a wire brush and paint the bare areas with anti rust paint. Fill any hairline cracks with two coats of anti rust paint.

If a joint is leaking and you are unable to dismantle it then you need to carryout repairs. Seal the leaking joint internally with waterproof mastic after cleaning the surface. If one joint is leaking there might be others also so do a thorough job and apply the mastic to all joints. If a leak has developed in a plastic rainwater pipe, just replace that part of it, and apply master sealer at both ends to prevent any leakage. While buying a replacement section of guttering, remember to take along an old piece of guttering so that you buy new pipe of correct diameter and shape.

Metal guttering and rainwater pipes should be painted to keep them safe. If the paint of your guttering has spoiled just clean it with a sand paper apply a primer and after it dries paint it up again.

People are not duplicatable. Systems are!

A list of all your friends and family members are not a system. Thats your upline wanting to turn you into that pushy sales guy almost everyone disapprove of.

Interview Etiquette: An Overview

If etiquette can be described as rules governing socially acceptable behavior, they apply to a job interview, too, in the same fashion. Good etiquette shows from the moment you enter the company, and how you conduct yourself until you are called.

1. Unless someone shows you in, knock at the door before you enter.

2. Being lenient with dressing, un-pressed clothing or wearing casual clothing for interviews is simply not good etiquette. An office environment and especially interviews call for formal dress.

3. Greeting the interviewer is another aspect of etiquette. Greet him before he greets you, and with a firm handshake. Be assertive in shaking hands, as this is where you can start building a good impression. Remember, being assertive does not mean you are aggressive. Some people slightly take back their opposite shoulder and bend forward simultaneously while shaking hands as a show of respect. But don't indulge in over doing it or shaking hands for endless seconds.

4. Wait until they offer a seat to you or you can ask them if you can have a seat. Choose a seat opposite the interviewer so you can keep direct eye contact. You can sit in a semi-casual position. Crossing the legs at knees may be alright but you should never put a foot over your opposite knee. Shaking your legs during the interview or scratching your head are things to avoid.

5. If you are offered business card, don't just stuff it into your pocket; instead, study the card for a while. You should ask a pertinent question, too. Never write anything on the card; it is not your notepad.

6. Trying to monopolize the conversation will often annoy the interviewer. Making rude remarks or speaking negatively about your past employers will expose the down side of your character. Sitting there with nothing to say can be seen as a negative. You have to have something to say, even if it is just small talk.

7. When you are asked to talk about yourself, they are not asking about your family or personal history. This is your opportunity to make the most of your time; talk about how you can contribute to the organization and so on.

8. Avoid discussing salary in the beginning unless the interviewer brings it up first.

9. Never forget to thank the interviewer before you leave the room; also don't forget to ask whether they want you to get in touch with them or when they can get back you.

10. On your way out, give a thank you and a smile to the receptionist or secretary. These are the people that will often give feedback to the interviewer.

While this isn't a profound strategy I admit, it is amazing to me how often I see that it is overlooked. Plenty of businesses and business people need to be reminded.

I don't mean putting together some wishy-washy, lukewarm appreciations or referral ideas that most businesses have, such as calendars, birthday cards or fruit baskets. I mean grabbing insight into your client that is so intense that it is not new clients, but old that end up adding to your growth.

Taken together, both old and new clients are a powerhouse to more referrals and a stellar referral program. I am not sure who said it first, "Your best prospects are your existing clients." This is, indeed, a very simple yet true statement.

Are you putting your referral efforts into your existing clients? Are you positioning yourself for reselling? Upselling? Cross-selling? Are you staying in touch everyway possible? Try it.

Some ideas I can think of to subtly remind your clients you want referrals include using package inserts, regular mailings, special offers, coupons, referral letters, short notes, article clippings, and yes, even e-mails.

The point is to stay in touch about referrals. This gets theem used to you, and puts you first when they run into a family member or business associated who needs expertise, such as yours.

Follow these steps to more client referrals and more business:

1. Keep in touch. All clients want to feel special and that you have an interest in their needs.

2. Provide reassurances after purchase. Every time a client places an order, call them a few days later and see how it's going.
This will keep the "post-purchase" devil from rearing his ugly head.

3. Give clients the best deals possible, including guarantees that you can get away with.

4. Use 'preferred pricing', let 'old' clients in on the best deals. Give them first crack at buying before new clients.

5. Build trust. Be honest. Think about the people or business you buy from. It's probably because you trust them. People do business with those they trust.

Remember: People bought from you. They will keep buying and re-buying only if they have a good experience and, of course, hear from you regularly.

Follow these rules and you will generate more consistent referrals in your business every month.
