When I went home for Christmas last December, the first thing my parents said when I got off the plane was "It looks like you've grown, did you get taller?"

I hadn't grown at all, not one inch. So why was this their first reaction after not seeing me for sixth months? One word: I had become more confident.

Confidence is a funny thing in human beings. When you're feeling confident you tend to stand taller, hold your head up, and walk differently. It affects all areas of your body (eye contact, breath, stride, voice tone, etc).

What my parents were picking up on was not a change in my height, it was a change in confidence, and I believe Toastmasters was one important contributor to that improvement.

For those who don't know, Toastmasters is an international non-profit organization that helps people improve their public speaking. It is fairly inexpensive (less than $100 per year), and puts you in a supportive environment with other people who are learning to speak in public, become better leaders, an improve their social interactions.

Toastmasters is really only about giving speeches on the surface, and it can affect many other areas of your life.

It all starts with the fact that speaking in public is one of biggest causes of anxiety for most people. In fact, many people rate public speaking as being more frightening than death!

But one thing I discovered about overcoming anxiety and growing as a person is that every time you feel anxiety and STILL take action, you will build confidence. In fact, I believe that's the only way to build confidence: doing the things that you fear the most.

This happens to be one of the most important lessons you can learn as an entrepreneur in my opinion, because you will be faced with scary moments frequently in business.

Here are a few ways that Toastmasters can help you become a better entrepreneur and get a similar boost in confidence.

1. You Speak In Public More Often Than You Know

You probably speak in public more often than you realize, and will be required to do so even more in the future. Each time you pitch an idea, rally you team to accomplish something, inspire others to join you, do an interview with the media, or meet a new person, you are speaking in public.

We all know how important it is the build relationships in business, and if you can be the person who fearlessly networks with big shots at a conference, wows the media with your eloquence, or inspires employees to gladly work overtime for the good of the company, then you will rise to the top faster than your peers.

One interesting part of every Toastmasters meeting is called Table Topics. The presenter will call out a short question and then randomly pick on someone from the audience to come give an impromptu two minute speech about it. It can be quite nerve-racking to give a two minute speech with zero preparation! I can't tell you how valuable this skill is in learning how to interact with others, hold a group's attention, and just become a more interesting person!

If you can't effortlessly talk with anyone (man or woman) at a party for 10-15 minutes and have them remember you in a positive light afterwards, then you are missing out on valuable opportunities. Toastmasters can help you become more comfortable in those social interactions.

2. A Sense of Humor Is A Valuable Tool

At every Toastmaster meeting there is also a member selected to tell a joke. This is used as an icebreaker to bring the meeting participants together.

Guess what? The first few times I held this job, I got nothing more than a few courtesy laughs. I realized that I didn't know how to tell a joke!

I decided to work on this area in Toastmasters (there is also a manual you can work through to practice giving humorous speeches) and eventually started to learn the structure of humor.

I even went to the "open mic" night at the local comedy club a few times (talk about anxiety!) after going through the Toastmasters manual. I certainly wasn't the funniest person there, but I learned a lot in the process and once again built my confidence.

Humor is a powerful tool in your arsenal that can be used to defuse embarrassing situations and make others like you (and want to work for you).

3. Entrepreneurs Must Be Leaders

The third thing that Toastmasters will teach you is leadership. There are numerous positions in the club that need to be filled from time to time. They don't require a huge commitment, but they do help you practice working with a team.

However, the most important lesson that Toastmasters can teach you about leadership is how to evaluate others.

After every speech in Toastmasters, you will be given an opportunity to evaluate the speaker and give them instant feedback (sometimes in the form of, you guessed it, giving another speech). One of the most important lessons I learned here was how to mix criticism with praise. Helping someone improve without crushing their spirits is a lesson every leader should know, and it's better to practice it in a safe environment before you need it in the "real world".

Providing constructive feedback and commanding an audience's attention are indispensable skills that every leader must posses. If are serious about becoming successful, and don't yet consider yourself a powerful leader, this is one way to make progress.

4. You Must Spend Time With Right Type of People

Finally, Toastmasters does a remarkable job of putting you around the right type of people.

One of the most important keys to success is life is to surround yourself with people who are more successful than you are. Toastmasters is the kind of group that attracts people who are interested in improving their life and becoming successful.

In my group, for example, I've made friends who've taught me about real estate investing, web server technology, and sales. When you get around the right type of people, they will start to invite you to other events around town, introduce you to other clubs, and share inspiring books they've read.

5. Your Body Language Could Use Improvement

No matter who you are, your body language needs improvement. Many people are totally unaware of what message they are communicating with their bodies, and how fast people are making assumptions about them.

Some recent studies have shown that people form an opinion about you in as little as two seconds after meeting you. In one such study, evaluations of professors at a particular university were compared with evaluations of people who had only seen two-second video clips of the professors with the sound turned off. Remarkably, 78% of people who only saw the two-second video clips rated the professors the same as the class who had spent an entire semester observing them!

Your dress, your eyes, your hands, your stride, your expressions, your voice tone, and your posture are broadcasting out a strong message to everyone you meet (whether consciously or subconsciously). Do you know what it's saying?

If not, you may want to get in a supportive environment where people can give you specific feedback.

Toastmasters is a brilliant concept that has provided quite a bit of value to me in the past year and half, and I'd encourage anyone (especially entrepreneurs) to join.

Many other seminars exist out there which cost thousands of dollars and provide similar classes to executives. Toastmasters can offer you many of the same advantages in a non-profit organization.

Remember that the way to overcome anxiety and grow as a person is right THROUGH that fear. Feel the fear, and take action in spite of it.

Have you had any of that kind of time lately? It seems that in today's society we are busier than ever. Our children are in multiple sports or activities. Many households must have both parents working fulltime.

Many people have to hold down two jobs just to make ends meet. I don't know too many people these days with much Free Time on their hands. I feel that is a shame. I do realize how busy everyone is, trying to make ends meet, trying to get the kids to school on time, trying to keep your head above water.

But without free time to enjoy and rejuvenate the soul you're just heading down the road to burn out. But where do you find the free time you crave and even need when there aren't enough hours in the day to get all the things done you still need to do? Organization is the key. When your spaces and your time are organized and tidy you will find that after a while you will in fact have more free time on your hands than you ever thought possible. When the house is organized, when the office is organized, and when your planner (your time) is organized then you will function at a higher level of efficiency.

Once you are functioning efficiently you will see that you actually do have pockets of free time through out your entire day. Once your time is being used efficiently you will even be able to schedule the free time you need for yourself, for your hobbies, or for spending with your family. By having your home in order you will no longer waste time searching for items. Not only that, but when your home is in order your other family members will also know where everything is and will no longer need you to spend time helping them search for items. Believe it or not, by having your home, office and time organized you will free up a lot of valuable free time. Time you never realized you were wasting. Yes, it will take time to get your home organized. I have no doubt about that.

However, it only needs to be a one time investment. Once you have organized an area of your home then all you have to do is tidy it up weekly, which will only take a matter of minutes, and that area will never need to be organized ever again. Imagine having your entire home organized and tidy. Imagine that it will only take under an hour a week to make sure every inch of your home is always organized and tidy. Wouldn't that be wonderful? By having your office organized, whether it's your home office or an office you go to every day at a company, by having it organized you will be saving untold amounts of time each week for the same reason you do in your home. You aren't wasting any time searching for anything. You know exactly where everything is.

You know exactly where everything goes. By having your time organized you will find that you are no longer wasting away your little pockets of free time. You can run errands that are all near one another at the same time. You can take mail or magazines or work that you need to read with you to doctor's appointments to take care of while you wait. Organizing your time seems daunting at first, but you can organize your day just as you would organize your closet. Each hour is a space and you need to fill that space up in a logical and organized way. There are many different ways to become more organized. You can do it yourself, or you can get help from books or from others, such as Professional Organizers.

Whatever way you decide to go to become more organized doesn't matter. What matters is realizing that if you have your home, your office and your time organized and tidy at all times then you will suddenly find much more Free Time than you ever thought possible. Time to relax. Time to reflect. Time to spend playing with the kids. Time to kick back and just take it easy. Free Time.

What most people view as an unobtainable luxury you will be able to live, without guilt, every single day, because you are organized. So make the commitment to get and stay organized. The hard work you will have to put in in the beginning will be more than worth it in the end. Here's to Free

How To Get Paid $1.17 For Every New Subscriber

Ask any direct mail business owner where the money is and you will get the same answer. The money is in the list. The same holds true for home based internet businesses. The money is in the list.

The difficulty with building a quality list is it takes time and money. You can advertise on PPC search engines, conduct ezine ad campaigns, work joint ventures with other publishers and generally work yourself half to death trying to get potential subscribers to your free sign up page.

But what if there was a more profitable system that eliminated the freebie subscribers? What if you could generate a subscriber list that was made up of proven buyers from day 1? And each new subscriber paid you $1.17 to be on your list. That makes better business sense.

Sound like a pipe dream? It is not. It is a proven system that builds your list at the same time it adds a cash flow to your business.

The system works like this:

Potential subscribers are offered something of value for free. But instead of being the typical ebook or free report it is a product like an interview or PC video presented on a CD or DVD. The new subscriber is offered the CD for free if they pay the shipping and handling. In actual fact, the price of shipping and handling covers the cost to produce, package and ship the CD and leaves you with a profit.

Let us take a look at a real life example. To increase subscribers for my newsletter, I offered a 1 hour audio interview with Kacper Postawski, a niche marketing genius. The interview was valued at $97, but I offered it as a free CD if the new subscriber paid the postage and handling of $6.95.

Postage and handling charge $6.95 – credit card processing 0.38 (5.5%) – credit card processor fee 0.45 – $4.95 CD duplication, packaging, and postage = $1.17 profit

This offer generated an average of 100 new subscribers per week with minimal promotion. It was a win/win situation. The new subscriber got a $97 product for free and I got paid $1.17 for each new subscriber to my list. If you really want to kick this system into high gear, put together a marketing campaign and watch your subscriber base build exponentially. Your bank account will thank you too.

Building a paid subscriber base can take longer than building a free database, but the quality is often much higher. Your list contains only customers, people who have already proven they are willing to whip out their credit cards and plunk some money online.

You could argue that the price is so low, they are almost free subscribers. The difference is, you know these people make purchases. You know what they are interested in so you can make back end sales by offering products that are in line with their interests.

Here is an example:

You offer your potential new subscriber a free CD about list building. The customer pays $6.95 for shipping and handling, which covers your costs and leaves you with $1.17 profit. You know the customer is interested in list building, so they probably have a business.

From here you can move in one of two directions. For your back end products, you could offer complimentary products that a business builder would need. You could offer marketing material, copywriting products, advertising guides, basically anything that a business owner could need to build their business.

The other direction you could move towards is selling more in depth material on list building. Here is an example of this path:

The next product you could offer them is a Manual and a CD for $47.

A natural progression could be an ecourse for $197. The course could lead to a List Building Power Pack that contains manuals, tutorials, DVDs and CDs for $997.

The Power Pack could lead to a seminar for $1,997, which could lead to a 1-on-1 coaching session for $5,000.

You could also combine the two marketing methods and offer your customer a combination of higher priced list building material as well as other business building products.

Ramping up your sales is normal business in the direct mail industry and it works online just as well.

The drawback to this kind of list building is it is not automated. It takes time to manage the database and the system. This is the kind of work that is best to be outsourced when your business gets big enough.

Building lists can be time consuming work, but it is time well spent. If you are paid $1.17 for each new subscriber, it can be profitable, even before you bring in your back end sales.

What brought this to mind today was reading an article this week on "beware the neurotic imposter bosses" in The Daily Mail (Friday August 26th p20). It got me thinking about how we treat ourselves and the consequences that this can have in a number of areas of our lives.

The article in the Daily Mail talks about the type of people who may feel like this. They are generally high achievers, have brains and talent (even if they wouldn't say this!) and may be moving towards the top of their field. Behind all this though is the "neurotic imposter" who is out to sabotage what success they have, by the fact that they fail to believe in themselves and what they do. In terms of some ways that this may show itself - some of these may be familiar to you - it's that sinking feeling when someone says "Oh, you're the expert on that, aren't you" when your heart is saying, "me, really? No, I don't think so, I mean, I know something....but expert??!" Get the picture? Ever had this happen? I know as I have moved through jobs as I have been recognised at doing a great job at one level I have had the same mental challenges of feeling that really I'm just not good enough. What are the consequences of this? Many of you will know them for yourselves, and they start with how you feel, that feeling of slight discomfort or dread. In addition to this, and this is what the article focuses on, it may lead to you not only damaging your own career through a lack of self belief, but because of how you drive those around you causing low morale for them, hamper decision making and stifling innovation. So, what can you do if you are feeling like this? I've got some key tips to help you focus on avoiding feeling like a neurotic imposter, and moving yourself to being a "deserving & confident individual" How much better does that sound??! 1. Begin with the end in mind. This is all about thinking about the right attitude to show yourself as that deserving and confident individual in your work. Can you tell people clearly what you do? Set yourself up for success with a positive mindset about your new work. Understand what success looks like, both in terms of what the company wants and in terms of what it will take you to feel that you are "really doing it". 2. Create some positive affirmations to help you focus on the great things you have already achieved, and which have gained you this position. If you feel troubled by one particular area, use this to turn around for a positive. For example, if you feel that you have problems with confidence, your affirmation may be "I am becoming more confident day by day. Others witness how confident I am". 3. Look after yourself. Recognise that you need to set yourself some learning time. This was one of the areas that I found hardest when I transitioned to a new role, from one I had been in for 4 years and been an "expert" in. By understanding what success looks like you are more likely to be successul, however you need to understand that you won't be at 100% straight away - and that that's ok. Give yourself this permission to learn from the new situation. 4. Take the new learnings and keep a journal so you can see daily how far you are travelling on the road to mastery. 5. Look after yourself - don't spend all your time at work. Factor in some fun stuff, or at the least some pampering and relaxation when you get in. All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl! 6. Find out what you need to do ... and do it. Get clear on your objectives ,and how your role fits into the wider picture. How does it fit within your team, department, company, competition? Think about what you need to become a "master" at your work 7. Set yourself some realistic goals for when you start that position, or start to change your mindset. Rate yourself on where you are now on a scale of 1- 10, and then decide what your goal is in terms of how you want to feel, what you want to see, and what you want to hear when you hear people talking about how you do that job. 8. Get some support. This may be understanding who will help and support you in your role, anyone who can act as a mentor for you, someone who is safe for you to talk to when you get stuck, someone who knows the situation you have gone into. 9. Reviewing the situation....set up some time to review how you are doing. Can you get feedback - see feedback as a learning opportunity, and watch out for positive and developmental trends. What will take you to the next level? 10. Enjoy it. You have reached it already - it's taking your power away to keep wondering what is around the corner. Put in a strategy that works for you to turn off the gremlin voice that tells you that you aren't good enough. You've already done it. You'll do it again. Celebrate it!! Some extra quick tips for you... If you're a boss of someone you suspect feels like a neurotic imposter....think about what you can do to support them When you are parenting...think about what expectations you are setting with your children. Are they realistic yet stretching? How woudl you feel if you were them? Does that change your perspective? For yourself...ask yourself what would make the biggest difference to how you feel about your job...and do it.

You're in it for the money, not a whole bunch of prizes that you'll be unlikely to ever use!

Now we've talked about paid surveys, but there are also things we call focus groups which is basically a group chatroom where you will get asked a series of questions and all they are looking for is your opinion on certain topics. They usually go for around 30 minutes and the rewards are generally a little higher and sometimes a lot, depending on the focus group you are taking part in.

There are some focus groups that have huge payouts, sometimes over $100 if you are lucky. It is a little harder to get picked for these focus groups, however if you make sure you spend enough time applying and checking to see when new ones are opening, you'll have a good chance to be apart of them.

In the end, the more time and effort you are willing to put in will determine whether or not you make money from paid surveys and focus groups. And when I say time, that usually only means an hour or two a day searching and applying. I'm sick of hearing people saying they can't make any money from paid surveys. These people are usually the one's that could not be bothered to put the time in everyday. If you are a naturally hard working person, then you'll have a good chance at making some good money each month from taking part in paid surveys and focus groups.

From experience a lot of them don't so much lie on their sales pages, but certainly hype their product up to be a lot more than it actually is. Let's see how this package compares!

So how does it work?

Well, you sign up with the Company (Paid Surveys Etc) and in your profile area you will fill in some basic information about yourself including your hobbies and interests so the company can get to know a little bit about what kind of person you are. When an appropriate survey or focus group needs to be completed you will receive an email telling you that you are invited to participate. In the email they also offer you the reward for taking part.

We are now going to tell you some information that they don't. As we said earlier there is a lot of skepticism over these kind of companies living up to their reputation. What we will say is that this company is by far the best survey company we have come across yet but just like the rest they do claim you can make a lot more money than in reality.

There certainly is a flood of surveys to keep you busy all day if thats what you would like to do but we found that the average survey rewards (that were sent to us anyway) were between $3 - $15. Not the $20-$45 that they claim.

Realistically if you give an hour of your time a day to complete say 5 surveys lets say, you will be expecting around $100-$150 a month. So this is by no means a great package pushing you to instant wealth but if you would like some extra cash each month to take the family out for a meal or whatever floats your boar then this can be a nice little earner for the work and time involved.

The other great thing about Google Adsense is the ads are targeted to the content that you post, giving the reader even more reason to click through.

(Quick Tip: The first 10 listed under each category are the TOP converting programs, meaning... their the ones making the most money.)

If you don't have a ClickBank.com nickname you'll have to sign up for one. It'll only take you a few minutes.

A huge £400 million development in the Thames Gateway area in Kent is set to create thousands of new homes and jobs.

Work has begun on a project called 'The Bridge' designed to create a whole new community on a site near to the M25 River Thames crossing at Dartford in Kent, according to BBC reports.

Developers have planned to build 1,500 houses on the site and the new community should bring a total of 7,500 jobs into the area.

As the project starts to take shape around 264 acres of Brownfield land will be transformed into homes, offices, a school, a shopping complex, a wildlife park, reclaimed lakes and landscaped open space.

The Bridge project will be linked to Kent Thameside's Fastrack transport system and buses will connect Dartford, Bluewater, Greenhithe and Gravesend in north Kent.

The Thames Gateway area stretches for 40 miles from east and south-east London to parts of Kent and Essex.

The yes answer is that for the most part achieving compliance with your policies and procedures can happen if you are willing to put in the time, and effort into your staff, your business and the legislative requirements for your industry in your country.

That is ensuring your staff are adequately trained in what you want them to do in the normal events of the business day. After all no-one can perform to the standard required if they don’t know what that standard is.

The harder part of the yes answer is the culture around your work place. Is yours the kind of workplace that encourages worker contributions to the development of procedures and policies? Do you encourage staff to trial new methods of achieving the work required? Or do you discourage them?

Companies that achieve compliance tend to be companies that encourage staff to try new ways, to give input into the development of ways of doing business.

Open management styles and companies that have a culture of team work find it a lot easier to achieve high compliance every day.

The no response comes from the fact that people are just people and everyone will have bad days and make mistakes. The real trick comes from determining whether something isn’t working due to lack of training, human error or error with the procedure or policy that you have implemented.

The lack of training is an easy problem to solve. Simply organise training for your staff. This can often be done locally, but some companies now offer plenty of e-learning options that can be written specifically for your needs.
