Perhaps one of the trickiest methods of marketing ourselves and our mortgage products is over the telephone.

The telephone offers many challenges. For starters the potential customer is unable to put a face with your name, which more often than not leads them to draw inferences based on the sound of your voice. This may or may not be a good thing.

Also, these days everybody has caller id and has the option to screen your call should they not be in the mood to discuss mortgages. Many times you can be left hanging with nothing but somebody’s voice mail and never have an opportunity to speak with your customer.

However, voice mail can actually be considered a blessing in disguise. Here is where you have an opportunity to dangle a carrot in front of your customer.

If you just so happen upon a voice mail while cold calling, don’t just leave your name, number, and the company you work for with a hint of disappointment in your voice, be sure to leave them with a reason to call you, make them wonder what you meant behind your message.

Say something like this;

“Good evening Ms. Jones, my name is Jon Smith and I work for XYZ mortgage company. I understand that you are interested in a mortgage. I have looked over your scenario and I believe that I have the right product to meet your needs, so please give me a call back at a time convenient for you. Thank you.”

And smile while you are talking, the inflection will come out in your voice.

Another challenge you may face is when a customer tells you that they need to speak to their spouse before making a decision.

Should this happen, ask if their spouse is available now, and if so, ask to speak with them now.

If not, ask if there was anything that you did not explain clearly enough and that you would be happy to go over everything again.

If this doesn’t work, back off and ask if you may call back at a designated time convenient for your customer.

The more you cold call and work the phones the better your mortgage marketing skills will become over the phone. And as long as you know your products and you are prepared to explain them, success will come all the easier for you.

I will touch on a few more things I think are vitally important. As a matter of fact you might want to write these on the inside of your eyelids.

1) Write Articles On What You Feel Passionate About

What heats your chili? What fries your bacon? What gets your mojo going? Whatever your mojo is. It is a lot easier to come up with content on something you are very familiar with and excited about. Also you won't mind doing the research because you love the topic. I admit this one is obvious but you'd be surprised how many people try to write on things they couldn't care less about because someone said they should. If you are bored with it then it will come across in your article and people will go to the kitchen, get a cup of hot chocolate, try to read your article but end up taking a nap.

2) Write Lots of Articles Not Just A Few

With all the hype on the internet there seems to be this thinking "if you write it they will come" and that all you have to do is write 1 or 2 articles and traffic comes racing to your site in an overflowing river. Hogwash! It will take time. It is true trafic comes but as a platinum writer for Ezine Articles I am making it my goal to hit 50 articles this year. The more you write the more points of contact you have out there directing people back to your site. I am getting more traffic now than ever before but think of where I will be in a year. You should do the same. Make it a goal to write 25 articles and then see how you feel at that point.

3) Write a Provocative Summary

This is where you want to grab them. Your summary should not be dull and dry and full of big intellectual words trying to impress people with your boundless wisdom. It should be able to pull the reader into the article. I know when I am reading articles I often just read the title and the summary to decide whether or not I want to read on. I can't remember who I heard it from but I like this little formula for writing articles. He said " tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, then tell what you just told them".

4) Learn To Use Your Resource Box Properly

If you miss it here you may as well not even write an article. The whole point of an article is to bring in visitors to your site. This is done in the article body and more importantly in the resource box. I can't believe how many people go on about their accomplishments here as though that is going to draw people. I purposely will not click through to anyone who brags about himself here when I am reading an article. Why? Because they should know better. Truthfully NOBODY CARES what degrees you hold or what plaques are on your wall. What is in it for the reader if they click through to your site. Learn to set up your resource box this way.

5) Track Your Article

If you want to see where your article is being picked up simply type your article title in Google in quotations. This will bring up every link out there where the spiders find your article. This is another reason to have a good unique title because if your title is the same as a lot of other articles you will bring up all of them as well. As I said before you should be on board with the big article directories as I have noticed the search engine spiders seem to like them more.

Of course I have only scratched the surface here and there is so much more we could touch on when it comes to writing great articles.

Documentation is key when it comes to the tax agencies.

Next, depending on volume, set aside time on a daily or weekly basis to put your receipts in order. Complete statements, summarize accounts and organize all of your receipts to make it easy for your accountant to develop your statements. The less time they spend on doing this will usually mean less cost to you. Consider hiring a lower paid clerk to complete the organization of all receipts, payroll etc for you, which is then turned over to the accountant at the appropriate time.

Finally meet with your accountant on a regular basis, usually after your year end and well before your tax statements are due to finalize any tax strategies that you want to put in place for the past year as well as the coming year. Stay organized and you will have a much smoother relationship with your tax department.

Equally unfortunate is the fact that people tend to give you advice if they know you have a horror of making that first call to a stranger. Each one is worse than the other. How can you not feel the trepidation of intruding into a person's space when you don't know him from Adam? You would never have done it if you weren't getting paid for it. Then, there's always the underlying criticism, especially from your superiors that it is your fault. The success is because of what they taught you, the failure is always yours and yours alone. Then the admonition about just accepting it and not being bothered by it. How on earth does one handle a slap in the face? This might just be a figurative thing, but the rejection is loud and clear.

The strange thing is that it is not just the newcomers who are beset by these fears. Scratch the surface and you'll find veteran salesmen also break out in a cold sweat if they find they are being rejected rudely. Just making more calls is no salve to a bruised ego. The hurt just gets pushed in - it doesn't disappear. Unfortunately, traditional sales programs are built for rejection. They teach you to push your way through any little gap and you get pushed right out again. Customers don't like pushy people. Wouldn't they listen to you if you asked ever so nicely instead of launching off on to a sales pitch even before he has time to say Hello? Wouldn't you rather he asked you what your product was all about for a change before you gave him your prepared sales pitch? Could it just be that you don't have the right tools or means to get you this kind of reaction?

So, instead of feeling guilty, tell yourself that the rejection of cold calling is not your fault. It is the fault of the way it is being done. Maybe it needs a subtle approach, a certain savoir faire for it to work. Maybe selling techniques in today's world are outdated and need to be relooked at and reformulated so to speak to make them relevant and successful. So, once again, say "It's not me - it's not my fault." Deep down inside of you, you know that it isn't. That you are not to blame for people saying No or Sorry. You might continue to do it, to follow the same old approach but you'll be doing it as a job, without feeling you are not performing to some standard that you have to reach.

One day, you buy your first plier and some rolls of wire and make your first loop. Disastrous, of course. You add one bead and painstakingly get to add the hook and you feel like the Queen of Jewelry Land. You actually get it to make a pair. Double feeling of being the queen.

Years go by and you keep working. Adding the hooks does not take hours anymore, so you start adding little embellishments, maybe a spiral loop. During these years, you learn the hard way all the ways you can make mistakes in this business. A few times along the way you decide you won’t make it anymore and maybe ramble with other arts, but pliers and wire always call you back and you find yourself awake at 5 AM because you suddenly woke up with that necklace design in your head. But it’s not easy. It makes you mad to think “why others can?” while you can’t seem to make it. Your artist ego is frustrated. You are tired of going nowhere. Things like marketing, advertising and promoting sound like from another world. A scary world. You’re an artist, you’re not a salesperson. But maybe you can’t quit your day job because you wouldn’t bay your bills selling jewelry.

But then, one day, you start working patiently and silently. Do not argue anymore about your doomed fate and overcome yourself by working seriously, making a business plan that works and give good results soon. 7 Tips to Be a Better Jeweler: The Ego Issue
According to both Buddhism and Psychology, your ego is a small angry child that never grew up. Instead of thinking rationally, we humans tend to act forced by that little child that, of course, cannot manage with an adult’s issues and just cries and moans and get completely paralyzed in fear of the unknown. Surprising, ah? If you ask yourself too much things like “Why do I never have luck?” or “Why does this always happen to me?”, maybe you’re letting that little child control your life.

The key to personal (and world) happiness is putting that child to rest letting it flow through creative activities, love and self – acceptation, but making choices with a higher conscience. Good choices bring happiness to us and good energy to the Universe, that will flow back to us through opportunities helping us achieve our full potential. As artists, we are even more inclined than many other people to reach a higher state of consciousness, so it should be easier for us to understand this facts.

1: You can always make it better.
Ego says: “I’m very very good” but really, how good you are? This is a very competitive world and you must be objective about the quality of your work. How can your jewels be improved? Can they be safer? Have you double-checked everything before you package it? Are you selling something that may eventually break or fall off?
Remember that the kind of customer that you will die for is one that looks for quality and durability. A very good question to ask yourself is “Would I pay that money for this jewel?”

2: You can always treat your customers better.
Ego says “Making that custom gift box is really hard work, and for free!” Please, be more respectful with your customers! Some of the money they pay for a (never forget that) completely unnnecessary item you sell is very hard-earned! From all the jewelers around they’ve chosen YOU! There is always time to add and extra gift for a good customer. As artisans we need customers that come back again and again, and that always think of you first when they need a special jewel for their social events or gifts. We need a customer that speaks wonderfully of our work and bring new customers with them so, what do people find when they meet you, whether if the meeting is at your studio or at your booth? Treat them all the same, whether if they make big of small buyings. Know them as much as you can and try to put all your best efforts to make them feel at home with you.

3. Work hard to find your own style.
Ego says “Oh, my style is truly unique!” but the truth is that there is almost no such thing in jewelry business, or in any art business. Finding your own way includes a LOT of constant learning and humility. Strive to make the jewel you really dream of and do not feel pressured by what you can sell or whom you can sell to. If your pieces breath uniqueness they will sell out.

4. Give and Teach as much as you take and learn from others.
Ego says “oh, if I share my techniques everyone will make copys of my work and sell more than me for sure” Really, have you heard how childish that sounds? Change your view about yourself and ask yourself if someone could envision you as a master in your particular style.

Sharing your techniques, whether as downloadable files for small prices (tutorials are usually very cheap) or simply for free like I’m doing now, will not only improve your business karma wonderfully, but also will make you get a lot of respect from learners and professionals alike. Building a good reputation will mean a good percentage of your sales one day, but you have to start now.

5: Forget about inspiration
Ego says: “I’m an artist, I can’t work if I’m uninspired”…well, and Pablo Picasso said inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. Who do you believe? I chose to believe Master Pablo, of course. Inspired or not, work everyday. I’m sure there are a lot of “office issues” like web updating, taking better pictures of your items, making tags or whatever that you have pending, as we all have, that you can make it on your uninspired time. My husband is an electrician company director and he goes to work everyday, whether if he’s inspired or not! Why should I have that privilege?

6. You can make your own ways to sell and promote your work
Ego says “I’m an artist, I can’t deal with sales and publicity. That’s not what an artist is supposed to be.” Something I really hear a lot. I truly believe that, as artists, we are even more able to sell ourselves than other professionals because creativity is the real key to publicity success. The true instinct to find beauty is inside every true artist. Though I think is essential to read a good quantity of marketing articles, we have an ability to create that is a natural advantage. Again, change your point of view about yourself and create new ways to promote your work.


7. Don’t take critiques personally
Ego says “Oh, that person I don’t know at all thinks my jewelry is awful…I am a complete failure!” Well, you don’t like everything, so don’t expect your jewelry to be loved by everyone. What a person says about your work may be influenced by many things that do not have to do with your work at all. Be always ready to follow positive advice inmediatly, but don’t let other people’s feelings reflect on you self image. Remember, maybe that person is also talking through her/his little angry child!

Epilogue
Learning the business takes time and effort. There is no instant success and if there is, it will pass soon leaving you wondering what you did wrong… and making you learn another good lesson – which should always be seen as a valuable thing. I am personally guilty and all crimes said above and in many, many more that have turned into a deeper knowledge of myself, my work as an artist and the world around me. I am very proud of all my mistakes, in fact!

We all are on an endless road of personal growing, with no finish line. There is always someone wiser than us and someone that may need our advice as well. It seems that one of the most common problems new screen printers run into is printing white ink. I've heard a lot of questions like: Why do all my other colors print fine and white is so tough? Why is it that my white ink is so thick? Why can't I get a smooth white ink? It's always rough and seems to have texture to it. Is there anything I can do to thin my white ink to make it easier to print? Also comments like: "Our white ink is bad, it comes off after only a couple of washes." "There's something wrong with my press, it prints fine when I am printing on white shirts, but when I print on dark shirts the white ink is very blurry." Unfortunately, the answers to these quarries usually lie in the printer themselves. No, your white ink isn't defecting, your press probably works fine, and you shouldn't need to thin the ink. Yes, you probably need to change some variables and techniques during the printing process. The truth of the mater is, the answer is in the question all along.So why does the screen printing process work fine for a while and then as soon as you start printing white ink, smash, a road block. The truth is, you may have been doing the wrong things the whole time, it just didn't show up yet . It's like swimming, sure you can dog paddle and flounder around the pool all day. However, when it comes to swimming a long distance, without the proper techniques you'll work twice as hard and get half as far. Printing on light garments is much easier than printing white on dark garments. On a light garment, not as much ink is required to achieve good coverage. Also many times you're working with thinner inks. Ink varies in viscosity according to how much pigment it has in it. For instance, a black ink is almost always going to be printed on lighter colors, the pigments needed for the black to show up are considerably less then the pigments needed for a white ink to cover a dark garment. Thus, you're black ink is much thinner and easier to work with. You can do almost every technique wrong when printing black ink on a white shirt, and there's still a good chance that your final print will look pretty good. Since the ink is thinner, it passes through the screen mesh much easier, with less force, and clears the screen better. (For those unfamiliar with the term "clearing the screen," this defines the point when all ink is cleared out of the screen mesh and properly transferred to the shirt.)So basically when setting up a screen printing job that requires black ink on a white shirt, you can use the wrong screen mesh, have no off contact, and print with the completely wrong squeegee technique and still get an "OK" looking final print. However, if these same wrong techniques are tried when printing white ink, uh oh, game over! The unfortunate thing is, many printers start out this way and teach themselves completely wrong. In fact, this is how I learned. It's not the end of the world though! The first thing you'll have to understand and come to terms with is the fact that white ink is probably going to be the thickest ink you'll ever use. To achieve a bright white image on a black shirt, the ink has to be opaque which in turn means thicker. Sure you can find thinner white inks, or try to reduce the thicker ones, however you're defeating the purpose and you'll end up printing twice as much to try and achieve the same result. On the other hand, if you learn how to print correctly, then printing white is like taking a walk in the park.Over the past several years, every ink manufacturer in the country has been on the hunt for the "best" white ink on the market. Yes, they've come a long way. In fact twenty or thirty years ago white on black looked more like a light tan or gray than white. Now with inks available like Triangle Phoenix White or International Coatings White, you can achieve maximum coverage with minimal passes. Still, white ink has to be loaded with pigment which means it will always have a high viscosity.So what's the trick? How can you print white ink like the
pros.? The answer usually lies in a few simple changes to your setup and
technique. Apply these changes and really, it's not that hard.Before we delve into techniques, let's first discuss a little bit about pre press and setup.To properly setup a job using white ink you first must
understand a little bit on how to select the proper mesh size. Because white is
thicker, you want to print through the lowest proper mesh size that applies to
that print. If you try and print white through a higher mesh screen which has
much smaller holes in it (SEE MORE INFO on Silk Screening Mesh Sizes) its going to make it much harder to push the ink through the screen. It's also not going to allow as much ink through the screen as a lower mesh would.Typically you want to print white through mesh sizes ranging from 110-156. Granted sometimes the image dictates a high mesh count. For instance, since a half tone or fine line drawing cannot hold on a lower mesh screen, you'll have to use a high mesh frame and apply more passes to achieve a bright white. For the most part however, you'll want to use the lower meshes so that a larger amount of ink is deposited on the shirt.The second part of setup is to insure the screen is adjusted properly on the press. You want to be sure that you have a proper off contact of about 1/8-1/16 of an inch. Since white is a little thicker, you may want to go with a slightly higher off contact then normal, perhaps around 1/8 of an inch. Off contact is the height between the screen mesh and the substrate you are printing on.Proper off contact also allows the ink to be cleared from the screen mesh easily by releasing the mesh upward directly after the print stroke leaving all the ink smoothly on the shirt. One thing that you also want to be sure to apply when printing white ink is an off contact tab. This is a small piece of material (ie. a penny, cardboard, paper, a piece of plastic) that is the height of your off contact. This tab is placed on the end of the screen frame where it hits the top of the neck platen and not the shirt. By using an off contact tab, you insure that your off contact will remain through the entire print stroke. The tab keeps the end of the screen up although you are pushing down on the mesh during the stroke. Without an off contact tab, you may find that you have a harder time clearing the mesh because the screen wants to stay flat against the shirt with ink stuck in it.If you don't have the proper off contact a few problems could arise. If your off contact is too low then you will not be able to clear the screen properly. You should see the screen mesh bounce off the shirt and be able to see the ink and the shirt through a cleared screen mesh. If your ink stays in the screen mesh and the screen mesh sticks to the shirt, when you pull the screen up your ink will look very rough and parts may pull back off the shirt. If you're having this problem you may need to raise the off contact a little bit. Also, this problem could arise from your actual print stroke which will be discussed later.On the other end of the spectrum, if you're off contact is too high; you'll have to push down extremely hard on the squeegee in order to get all the ink down onto the shirt. I've been out to shops to help customers who literally had almost a half of inch of off contact. If your off contact is too high, not only will it be hard to transfer the ink onto the shirt, but there's a good chance that your screen won't come down in the same spot every time. This could cause a blurry image or double images after a flashing. A proper off contact is extremely important for a good looking image and an easy print.
Next let's take a look at technique. The majority of the technique in the screen printing process involves the print stroke. This includes squeegee angle, pressure, speed and release. That standard tendency of a new printer is to literally smash the ink through the screen by pulling the squeegee across the screen with an extremely low angle.When using thin inks, this impropertechnique could work because the ink passes through the screen so easily. However, if tried with white, you'll not only have trouble passing the ink through the screen but also have very blurry images because you're pulling the screen mesh so hard. Your squeegee should actually be about an 80-85 degree angle facing toward you. You should also focus your pressure over and down on the print and not on pulling the squeegee against the mesh.
SEE THE RIGHT SQUEEGEE ANGLE PICTURE
Many new printers stand back from the press, you actually need to stand over the press to focus your pressure down and not back. When your pressure is focused down, then you simply move the squeegee back over the print. With the proper squeegee angle, all of the ink will properly shear through the image and over your screen. In fact you should be able to run your finger over the design after its printed and barely any ink should show up on your finger.Now let's talk about the speed of your print. When we instruct printers to use the proper squeegee angle and pressure, the first impulse they have is to move the squeegee about the speed of a turtle. If your speed is too slow you won't be able to properly release and clear the screen. After a print stoke, many beginners tend to sit back and look at their print, then slowly pull up on the squeegee not allowing the screen mesh to bounce back up leaving ink still stuck in the screen. After a faster stroke, you need to almost give the screen a little pop in order to get the mesh to bounce back up leave a smooth crisp print on your shirt. This is achieved by a simple flick of the wrist, the same flick you would make to insure that you pick up all the ink on your squeegee blade. Only to create this pop and release the screen, the flick must be done a little faster.Finally, when flashing in between passes, you must wait until the shirt cools down a little until you print again. This is much easier to achieve on a multiple station press because it allows the pallets to cool down. On a single station press you may have to wait a few moments and wave your hand across the pallet to cool it down. If the ink is too hot from theprevious flash, you may have trouble clearing the screen because the ink will want to stick instead of release the mesh. It could also cause ink to partially cure in the mesh. Since white ink is thicker and you apply more layers of it, you MUST insure a proper final cure.White ink tends to reflect heat away instead of absorbing it in. This means that the ink and the entire print area must be cured from top to bottom at 320 degrees for about 45 seconds. Obviously the best way to cure white is in a conveyor belt dryer, however if you are using a flash dryer you want to be sure that the whole design gets the same amount of heat.One of the best ways to insure a proper cure is called the stretch test. Since your white image will be a little thicker, this test is easy to read the results. After your shirt is cured, simply take a small section of your design and stretch it slightly between your fingers. If the design sticks together like plastic and stretches well, then it is cured and you can continue with those curing parameters. However, if the ink cracks or breaks apart, this means the base of the ink is not cured properly and you need to increase yourcuring time for the shirt.
By following these steps and techniques you should find printing white ink a little easier. Granted, because there are so many variables involved in screen printing, you may have to work a little at it and modify slightly. However, after a few times printing the right way, you'll start seeing better results and have fewer problems.
