Printing the perfect card is not all it takes to make an impact. You also need innovative ways to distribute them. Aggressive business card marketing is not all about handing your business cards out to everyone you see, but making sure that the person receiving the card will hold on it and keep you in mind. As in other areas of business, there is a business card etiquette out there that we are summarizing below along with some tips and ideas of how to take advantage of every moment to network and promote your business using business cards.

Business Card Etiquette Rules:

Give a card- Get a card: Never hand out a card and move on. It will end up in the round filing bin. Always take your time to stop, hand out a card and ask for one. When you receive the card, do not simply put it in your pocket. Read it, and make notes. It shows appreciation for the person and makes her/him feel important. In return she/he will pay attention to your card. This process will help with the communication and might even prompt new points for conversation.

Give your card in the beginning of the meeting: Handing out your card in the beginning of any meeting, will help you from forgetting to give it at all. At the same time, it helps with remembering the names of the people you meet. Have the business card in front of you the whole time during meetings to help you refer to everyone using their names and make notes on it if follow up is needed*.

Never leave home without it: It is very common that people forget their business cards, but it has a negative effect if you do not have one to give out. Have plenty with you when on the road, visiting clients, and especially during tradeshows and networking events. Also, make sure the cards you are handing out are clean, in good condition and updated. Never make hand written corrections.

* In North America is recommended that you take notes on business cards given to you. It shows your interest to the individual. At the same time, in other cultures is offensive and disrespectful.

Networking opportunities using business cards:

Network by mail: The same way you receive direct mail with advertisements and promotions, you can now spread the word for your business. Even if you only mail a few bill payments per month, it would not hurt to include your business card. You never know who will receive it on the other end and if they need your service. It is also an unusual act and it will give a personal touch to your correspondence.

Ask for referrals: When you give out your card, do not simply follow a push sales tactic that might make the recipient uncomfortable. Try to take a pull approach where you ask for referral by handing out a few cards. That will make the communication less of a sales speech and will help you grow your network.

Be openhanded: Have always extra cards with you and do not be afraid to give out more than one card, even if you are running short. When visiting clients, make sure you leave them your cards to pass on to other colleagues or recommend you to others.

Promote you: Besides capturing essential personal information, the business card can serve as a promotional tool. Do not waste the back side of the card. Use it to list some of your services or products, and do not forget to include your company’s slogan. Even if you do not have one, come up with one that outlines your business scope.
Brand your business: Do not be afraid to give your cards to anyone, whether you feel they need your service or not. You are spreading the word out about your company, the same way that a magazine ad might be seeing by a reader who has no need of a specific product. Also be generous to give out a few of your cards, besides branding it helps boost your referrals.
