Sequence & Association

Let's take a gigantic step away from the day-to-day skills that make up career development. Let's look at a more abstract and fundamental part of career development. Let's look at the two most basic types of thinking: Sequence and Association. These are underlying thought types that don't come into everyday awareness, and yet to know about them adds direction to almost every thought you'll ever have.

Basically, these two categories are philosophical descriptions of thought types used to describe all other thoughts. But they are more than just two categories; they actually represent two very different types of thought. First, we are emotional and we respond to the things we encounter by association. Each of us feels our way through life by associating sights, smells, tastes, sensations and of course sounds with particular emotions. The associations are personal. They are the result of individual experience and these associations organize the fabric or our lives in a non-logical way. But the second way of thinking is sequence.

With language thoughts become organized logically. With language we name the things we encounter and we arrange experiences in time. We even rate our emotions: stronger/ weaker; better/ worse; best, fastest, greatest, lowest and it never stops. With language and intellect we can arrange everything into sequence. So there you have it, the two types of thinking. Look for them in everything around you. Look for them at work and you'll come to understand people in a different light.
