Today, opportunities to make money online are abundant. There are a number of different ways to make money, from freelancing and sales, to marketing or running auctions at Ebay. Unfortunately however, along with all of these wonderful legitimate opportunities, more Internet business scams are on the web then ever before.

You may feel confused at first when trying to determine if a business opportunity is legitimate or not, however with some good common sense and a little bit of research, you can tell if a money making opportunity is legitimate or a scam.

First, trust your instinct. This may sound a bit cliché, but it is the truth. If your first gut instinct tells you that something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. When in doubt, its best to wait, check things out, and then make a decision. However, more often then not, your first instinct is usually the correct one.

Second, if an opportunity asks for money upfront, you should check to see what the money is for. True business opportunities often require an initial start up fee so expect to invest money – just be careful that you're investing money, not wasting it. Some MLM businesses do require an investment, so you will have to use your best judgment and carefully research the company to determine if it is worth investing in or not. One of the best ways to do this is to check the company with the Better Business Bureau. Checking with the Better Business Bureau is a way to determine if other people have filed complaints against a company. You can visit the Better Business Bureau online, and it doesn’t take long to enter a company’s information to determine if complaints have been filed against them. If more people would simply research a company before giving them money, scam artists would victimize less people.

Sometimes, scams and fraudulent businesses will try to make you feel that you have to spend money fast. They use tactics such as saying, “Buy Now, while the price is hot” or “At these prices this won’t last!” These are ploys used to pressure you into spending on the spur of the moment, instead of taking the time to think about the purchase or business opportunity. Legitimate businesses do not need to pressurize you into buying or making a purchase. You should never fall into one of these traps and purchase a business or money making opportunity on the spur of the moment.

Other tactics used by scam and fraudulent companies include trying to make people pay for more information. If the opportunity is legitimate, they should freely give you all information, you should never you have to pay for more information pertaining to the business. Finally, always do your research and find out the company’s history, track record, and standing with the Better Business Bureau first.
